  • 1 lemon lemon slices preferably organic, sliced thin
  • 3 cinnamon sticks cinnamon sticks whole
  • 3 cloves whole cloves preferably whole

  • 2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup optional, for a touch of sweetness
  • 1 vanilla extract vanilla extract a few drops for depth

Equipment

  • Saucepan or small pot
  • Ladle or spoon

Method

  1. Pour water into a small saucepan and set it over medium heat.
  2. Add thinly sliced orange and lemon slices to the water, spreading them evenly.
  3. Place cinnamon sticks, cloves, and star anise into the pot, distributing them around the citrus slices.
  4. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, listening for a soft bubbling sound as the water heats.
  5. Lower the heat to maintain a gentle simmer, ensuring the ingredients release their fragrant oils without boiling vigorously.
  6. Add honey or maple syrup and a few drops of vanilla extract to enhance the aroma, stirring gently if needed.
  7. Let the mixture simmer for about 20 to 30 minutes, allowing the scents to envelop your space as the liquid reduces slightly.
  8. Occasionally check the water level and add more hot water if necessary to keep the ingredients covered.
  9. Once fragrant and simmering gently, turn off the heat and remove the spice sticks and large citrus slices if desired.
  10. Serve the remaining aromatic water in the pot, or transfer to a decorative bowl to enjoy the seasonal fragrance.

Notes

Use organic citrus for the best scent and avoid overboiling to prevent bitterness. Feel free to adjust spices to your preference for a more personalized aroma.
