Method
- Gather all your ingredients and tools. Measure out the butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg, and have the rum and hot water or cider ready.
- Place the butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg into a small saucepan. Turn the heat to medium and warm gently, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon or whisk until the sugar dissolves and the butter melts into a fragrant, smooth mixture, about 3-4 minutes.
- Add the dark rum and a splash of hot water or cider to the saucepan. Stir well to combine, then gently heat until the mixture is steaming but not boiling, about 1-2 minutes. You'll notice the aroma filling the room as it warms.
- Taste the mixture and adjust with more spices or sweetener if desired, stirring to incorporate any additions.
- Pour the hot buttered rum mixture into heatproof mugs. Fill each mug with additional hot water or cider if you prefer a lighter drink, and stir gently.
- Garnish each mug with a cinnamon stick or lemon peel for a fragrant finishing touch. Serve immediately while steaming hot and enjoy the cozy warmth.
Notes
For an extra touch, rim the mugs with cinnamon sugar or add whipped cream on top.
