Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter cut into small pieces
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 4 oz dark rum about 1/2 cup per serving
  • 1/2 cup hot water or apple cider adjust for desired strength
  • lemon peel or cinnamon stick for garnish optional

Equipment

  • Small saucepan
  • Measuring spoons
  • Mugs or heatproof glasses
  • Wooden spoon or whisk

Method

  1. Gather all your ingredients and tools. Measure out the butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg, and have the rum and hot water or cider ready.
  2. Place the butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg into a small saucepan. Turn the heat to medium and warm gently, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon or whisk until the sugar dissolves and the butter melts into a fragrant, smooth mixture, about 3-4 minutes.
  3. Add the dark rum and a splash of hot water or cider to the saucepan. Stir well to combine, then gently heat until the mixture is steaming but not boiling, about 1-2 minutes. You'll notice the aroma filling the room as it warms.
  4. Taste the mixture and adjust with more spices or sweetener if desired, stirring to incorporate any additions.
  5. Pour the hot buttered rum mixture into heatproof mugs. Fill each mug with additional hot water or cider if you prefer a lighter drink, and stir gently.
  6. Garnish each mug with a cinnamon stick or lemon peel for a fragrant finishing touch. Serve immediately while steaming hot and enjoy the cozy warmth.

Notes

For an extra touch, rim the mugs with cinnamon sugar or add whipped cream on top.
